“The reason why many fail in battle is because they wait until the hour of battle. The reason why others succeed is because they have gained their victory on their knees long before the battle came. Anticipate your battles; fight them on your knees before temptation comes, and you will always have victory.”
– R.A. Torrey
“Christ is like a river. A river is constantly flowing, there are fresh supplies of water coming from the fountain-head continually so that man may live by it, and be supplied with water all his life. So Christ is an ever-flowing fountain; He is continually supplying His people and the fountain is not spent. They who live upon Christ may have fresh supplies from Him to all eternity; they may have an increase of blessedness that is new, and new still, and which never will come to an end.”
– Jonathan Edwards
“From all your idols will I cleanse you.” Ezekiel 36:25
When there are no crosses, temptations, or trials,
a man is sure to go out after and cleave to idols.
It matters not what experience he has had. If once he
ceases to be plagued and tried, he will be setting up
his household gods in the secret chambers of his heart.
Profit or pleasure, self-indulgence or self-gratification,
will surely, in one form or another, engross his thoughts,
and steal away his heart.
If you watch your heart, you will see idols rising and setting
all day long, nearly as thickly as the stars by night.
But God sends . . .
trials,
difficulties,
temptations,
besetments,
losses,
afflictions,
to pull down these idols—or rather
to pull away our hearts from them.
– J.C. Philpot
“The greatest test of whether the holiness we profess to seek or to attain is truth and life will be whether it produces an increasing humility in us. In man, humility is the one thing needed to allow God’s holiness to dwell in him and shine through him. The chief mark of counterfeit holiness is lack of humility. The holiest will be the humblest.”
– Andrew Murray
“The culture of the entirely sanctified life is often misunderstood. The discipline of that life consists of Suffering, Loneliness, Patience and Prayer. How many who started with the high ecstasy of vision have ended in the disasters of shallowness! Time, the world, and God fire out the fools. Our Lord was thirty years preparing for three years’ service. The modern stamp is three hours of preparation for thirty years of service. John the Baptist and Paul were trained in the massive solitudes of the desert, as are all characters of God’s heroic mould.”
– Chambers, Oswald: Christian Disciplines
