J.C. Ryle – Pray for Others Also

J.C. Ryle -

J.C. Ryle:

“Let us take heed that we pray for others also. Let us beware of selfish prayers – the prayers which are wholly taken up with our own affairs, and in which there is no place for other souls beside our own. Let us name all whom we love before God continually. Let us pray for all – the worst, the hardest, and the most unbelieving. Let us continue praying for them year after year, in spite of their continued unbelief.

“God’s time of mercy may be a distant one. Our eyes may not see an answer to our intercession. The answer may not come for ten, fifteen, or twenty years. It may not come until we have exchanged prayer for praise, and are far away from this world. But while we live, let us pray for others. The greatest kindness we can do to anyone is to speak for them to our Lord Jesus Christ. The day of judgment will show that one of the greatest links in drawing some souls to God, has been the intercessory prayer of friends.”

Afflictions are the Mother of Virtue – Thomas Brooks

Afflictions are the Mother of Virtue - Thomas Brooks

“The flowers smell sweetest after a shower; vines bear the better for bleeding; the walnut-tree is most fruitful when most beaten; saints spring and thrive most internally, when they are most externally afflicted. Afflictions are the mother of virtue. Manasseh’s chain was more profitable to him than his crown. . . .All of the stones that came about Stephen’s ears did but knock him closer to Christ, the corner-stone.”

In God’s Furnace – Jonathan Edwards

In God's Furnace - Jonathan Edwards

“The surest way to know our gold is to look upon it and examine it in God’s furnace, where he tries it that we may see what it is. If we have a mind to know whether a building stands strong or no, we must look upon it when the wind blows. If we would know whether a staff be strong, or a rotten, broken reed, we must observe it when it is leaned on and weight is borne upon it. If we would weigh ourselves justly we must weigh ourselves in God’s scales that he makes use of to weigh us.”

Trust Perfected is Prayer Perfected – E.M. Bounds

Trust Perfected is Prayer Perfected - E.M. Bounds

“Trust perfected is prayer perfected. Trust looks to receive the thing asked for and gets it. Trust is not a belief that God can bless or that He will bless, but that He does bless, here and now. Trust always operates in the present tense. Hope looks toward the future. Trust looks to the present. Hope expects. Trust possesses. Trust receives what prayer acquires. So, what prayer needs, at all times, is abiding and abundant trust.”

Philippians 1:23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;

John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

James Smith was a predecessor of Charles Spurgeon at New Park Street Chapel in London from 1841 until 1850. Early on, Smith’s readings were even more popular than Spurgeon’s!

The habit of laying up a text of Scripture in the morning, to be meditated upon while engaged in the business of this world through the day—is both profitable and delightful. It is as a refreshing draught to a weary traveler!

A Heart Filled with Gentleness – J.R. Miller

A Heart Filled with Gentleness - J.R. Miller

“We ought to live our lives — so that they will be perpetual blessings wherever we go. All that we need for such a ministry — is a heart full of love for Christ; for if we truly love Christ — we shall also love our fellow-men; and love will always find ways of helping. A heart filled with gentleness — cannot be miserly of its blessings.”

Walking toward Heaven – Charles Spurgeon

Walking toward Heaven - Charles Spurgeon

“There is nothing that can assist you in walking toward heaven with good speed as much as wearing the image of Jesus on your heart to rule all its motions. It is when, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you are enabled to walk with Jesus in His very footsteps that you are happiest and most known to be the sons of God.”

In Long-suffering – Oswald Chambers

In Long-suffering - Oswald Chambers

“In long-suffering”—long-suffering is being drawn out until you can be drawn out no more, and not snapping. God puts His saints into places where they have to exhibit long-suffering. Let circumstances pull and don’t give way to any intemperance whatever, but in all these things manifest a drawing on the grace of God that will make you a marvel to yourself and to others.

Oswald Chambers – The Relationship Between God and Myself

Oswald Chambers - The Relationship Between God and Myself

“It is a great moment when we realise we have the power to trample on certain moods, a tremendous emancipation to get rid of every kind of self-consciousness and heed one thing only: the relationship between God and myself.”
