The Secret Power in Prayer! – Charles Spurgeon Sermons #shorts

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers.” In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon’s which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon’s College, which was named after him after his death.

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.

Athanasius of Alexandria’s Statement of Faith

Athanasius I of Alexandria[note 1] (c. 296–298 – 2 May 373), also called Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, primarily in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was a Greek church father and the 20th pope of Alexandria (as Athanasius I). His intermittent episcopacy spanned 45 years (c. 8 June 328 – 2 May 373), of which over 17 encompassed five exiles, when he was replaced on the order of four different Roman emperors. Athanasius was a Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Coptic Christian (Egyptian) leader of the fourth century.

Conflict with Arius and Arianism as well as successive Roman emperors shaped Athanasius’ career. In 325, at the age of 27, Athanasius began his leading role against the Arians as a deacon and assistant to Bishop Alexander of Alexandria during the First Council of Nicaea. Roman emperor Constantine the Great had convened the council in May–August 325 to address the Arian position that the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, is of a distinct substance from the Father. Three years after that council, Athanasius succeeded his mentor as pope of Alexandria. In addition to the conflict with the Arians (including powerful and influential Arian churchmen led by Eusebius of Nicomedia), he struggled against the Emperors Constantine, Constantius II, Julian the Apostate and Valens. He was known as Athanasius Contra Mundum (Latin for Athanasius Against the World).

Nonetheless, within a few years of his death, Gregory of Nazianzus called him the “Pillar of the Church”. His writings were well regarded by subsequent Church fathers in the West and the East, who noted their devotion to the Word-become-man, pastoral concern and interest in monasticism. Athanasius is considered one of the four great Eastern Doctors of the Church in the Catholic Church. In his Easter letter of 367, Athanasius was the first person to list the 27 books of the New Testament canon that is in use today.

England’s Ebenezer (Stone of Help) – Puritan John Arrowsmith

Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” (1 Samuel 7:12)

ARROWSMITH, JOHN, D.D. (1602-1659), puritan divine, was born near Newcastle-on-Tyne on 29 March 1602. In 1616 he entered St. John’s College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A.in 1619, and M.A. in 1623. In 1623 he became fellow of St. Catherine’s Hall. He married in 1631, and became incumbent in the same year of St. Nicholas Chapel, King’s Lynn. He was nominated on 25 April 1642 one of the two Norfolk divines to be consulted on church affairs. He sat as a member of the Westminster Assembly in 1643. In 1644 he was made D.D. and regius professor of divinity at Cambridge; and master of St. Catherine’s Hall, in the room of Dr. Beale, removed by the Earl of Manchester. On the sequestration of the Rev. Edward Sparke, D.D. (author of Scintilla Altaris), Arrowsmith obtained the rectory of St. Martin’s, Ironmonger Lane, in 1645, and became a member of the Sixth London Classis, as soon as the presbyterian form of government was set up. In 1647 he was Vice-chancellor of Cambridge University, and in 1649 became master of Trinity. His writings are sternly puritanical, but candid and clear. He must have had rich and endearing qualities and some breadth to secure for him at Cambridge the deep attachment of Whichcote, who speaks of him as ‘my friend of choice, a companion of my special delight, whom in former years I have acquainted with all my heart’, and further bears testimony to ‘ the sweetness of his spirit and the amiableness of his conversation.’ He died in February 1659, being buried 24 Feb. [Coles’ MS. Athense Cantab, in Brit. Mus Tulloch’s Eat. Theol.and Christ. Philos. in England in the Seventeenth Century, 1872, ii. 76-7.]

Charles Spurgeon the Puritan Prince of Preachers – Dr. Peter Hammond

http://www.frontlinemissionsa.org

Frontline Fellowship seeks to glorify God through:

  • Evangelising in War Zones
  • Assisting Persecuted Churches
  • Working for Reformation and Revival in Africa
  • Serving God in: Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Congo.

Evangelising in the War Zones
Frontline Fellowship is a Bible-based African Mission that has pioneered missionary work into neglected mission fields and areas resistant to the Gospel. Since 1982, Frontline missionaries have travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres by foot, by motorbikes, by dugout canoes, trucks and aircraft to boldly proclaim the Gospel of repentance and faith in Christ to soldiers, guerrillas, resistance fighters and civilians on all sides of many conflicts in Africa.

The Founder and Director of Frontline Fellowship, Dr. Peter Hammond, has personally carried out over 140 missions in the war zones and presented over 18,000 sermons, Bible studies and lectures in 38 countries. In the course of their missionary activities some Frontline missionaries have been ambushed, come under artillery bombardment and mortar fire, been stabbed, shot at, beaten by mobs, arrested and imprisoned. The Frontline mission base and high school in Sudan repeatedly came under aerial bombardment by the government of Sudan Air Force (10 times in 18 months). Over the years, 20 people involved in Frontline Fellowship outreaches have been imprisoned in Marxist or Muslim countries. Yet, by the grace of God, every one was freed in response to persistent prayer and pressure (Luke 18:1 – 5).

Assisting Persecuted Churches
Frontline Fellowship has been in the forefront of:
Pioneering missionary work into war-ravaged Angola, Mozambique and Sudan; Researching and opening up neglected areas and restricted access areas;

Assisting persecuted Christians and prisoners with books, emergency relief aid (including tons of medicines, foods, clothes, seed, bicycles and tools), encouragement and Bible teaching;
Developing a network of couriers and evangelists to distribute many tons of Bibles, in over 100 languages, to suffering Christians;
Providing in-depth leadership training for thousands of pastors, evangelists, chaplains, teachers, nurses and civil leaders in neglected areas;
Speaking up for the persecuted, publishing the sufferings and testimonies of believers in print, on radio, T.V. and in hundreds of international meetings every year.

Working for Reformation and Revival
Frontline Fellowship is a leading force in leadership training and networking for Reformation.

Frontline Fellowship publishes over 100 items a year and has distributed millions of Gospel leaflets, booklets, books and Bibles throughout Africa.

In Zimbabwe, Frontline is distributing food, medicines and Scriptures into some of the most desperately needy areas and providing leadership, training thousands of pastors, chaplains, medics and teachers.

Take Heed of Sinning in Thought – Puritan Ralph Venning

Puritans (Playlist):
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL147B764889A13CCA

Ralph Venning (1622-1674), nonconformist divine, son of Francis and Joan Venning, was born in Devonshire, perhaps at King’s Teignton, about 1621. He was the first convert of George Hughes [q. v.], the puritan vicar of Tavistock (dedication of Mysteries and Revelations, 2nd ed. 1649). He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was admitted as a sizar on 1 April 1643, graduated B.A. 1646, and proceeded M.A. 1650. He held a lectureship at St. Olave’s, Southwark, where he had a great repute as a preacher of charity sermons. Ejected by the Uniformity Act (1662), he became a colleague to Robert Bragge (1627-1704), pastor of an independent congregation at Pewterers’ Hall, Lime Street, Fenchurch Street, and held this charge till his death. He died on 10 March 1673-4, in his fifty-third year, and was buried in Bunhill Fields. He married Hannah, widow of John Cope of London, and left a son, and a daughter Hannah (d. 7 June 1691). His portrait was engraved by Hollar. Of his style, John Edwards (1637-1716) [q. v.] remarks in ‘The Preacher ‘ (1705, i. 203): ‘He turns sentences up and down, and delights in little cadences and chiming of words.’ His works still retain popularity; cheap reprints of some of them were issued in 1891.

Jesus not Sent to Condemn the World but to Save It – Dr. David Mackereth on John 3 #shorts

LINK TO FULL SERMON: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR6CYX-M5_0&list=PLzOwqed_gET2jU0jcWOSzx6RyHuA1PzmB&index=1

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

The Purpose of Gospel Preaching – Dr. David Mackereth (John 3:13-21)

Dr. David Mackereth became a Christian in 1982 whilst studying medicine at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Between 1990 and 1992 he trained for the Bible preaching ministry at the London Theological Seminary, founded by Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones. He worked in Accident and Emergency Medicine, but over the years was able to engage in Gospel preaching ministry. In 2018 he hit the national headlines as the Christian Doctor who refused to use transgender pronouns, whilst working for a government agency. This action got him fired, but he does not regret standing up for the truth. With God’s help, he continues to take a firm stand on this, and other issues.

John Berridge – On Conversion

John Berridge, Vicar of Everton, was a leading 18th century evangelical and a passionate open-air preacher who travelled all over East Anglia. Some historians claim that had he lived in London, he would have been one of the most famous preachers that ever lived. Instead he simply became known as “the countryside pedlar of the Gospel.”

To his father’s great regret, he showed no aptitude whatever for farming. Instead he developed an interest in spiritual matters. After several years his father despaired of teaching him the trade and in 1734 sent him to study theology at Clare College, Cambridge.

John Berridge found both the academic and social life at university highly stimulating. As well as reading theology, he studied logic, mathematics, and metaphysics. He built up a wide circle of friends, graduated with honours and in 1742 became a Fellow of the College.

However his wide-ranging interests brought him into contact with diverse ideas and theories which distracted him from studying the Bible.

Even so he was ordained in 1745, but still felt no wish to take up parish duties until 1749 when he became curate at Stapleford near Cambridge. Despite his enthusiastic sermons which advocated a life of good works, he had little success.

In 1755 he became Vicar of Everton, near Sandy, but still his preaching failed to have any effective results.

Later that year, as John Berridge was meditating on the Bible, he discovered that trying to earn salvation by good deeds alone was mere vanity and pride. Instead he began to recognise the idea of “justification by faith” — that salvation required an act of sovereign grace by God.

This discovery transformed his whole life. He lost no time in making up for the years he had wasted. He abandoned and burnt all his previous sermons and began to preach salvation by “faith” rather than “works”.

The effects were amazing: “Some of his hearers cried out aloud hysterically, some were thrown into strong convulsions, and some fell into a kind of trance or catalepsy, which lasted a long time.”

John Berridge’s ministry and outreach had a new authority. Within a few months people in the large congregations that gathered to hear him were regularly converted.

By 1758 he would ride on horseback far and wide across the whole of Huntingdonshire, Bedfordshire and the surrounding counties. He went wherever people could be found. He preached up to twelve open-air sermons and travelled over 100 miles each week.

Compelled by a desire to spread the good news of salvation, the indefatigable John Berridge became a leading evangelical in the same vein as the 18th century revivalists, such as the Wesley brothers, Daniel Rowlands and other Methodists.

Like them, he angered the clergy in whose parishes he preached, and the Bishop of Ely, Matthias Mawson, threatened to dispossess him unless he put a stop to his itinerant preaching. But the bishop backed down when William Pitt the elder, a friend from his Cambridge days, intervened.

Unlike some Methodists, he resisted marriage, and wrote that there was “no trap so mischievous to the field-preacher as wedlock; and it is laid for him at every hedge corner.”

Although John Berridge was not as well renowned for his preaching as George Whitefield and John Wesley, he played a vital part in the eighteenth century revival, as his contemporaries recognised.

Henry Venn, who accompanied Berridge on preaching tours, said in 1776 that he had “the largest congregations that were ever known …. and greatly was his word owned of the Lord.”

George Whitfield, who invited him to preach regularly at his chapel in Tottenham Court Road, London, described him as “a burning and shining light”.

After a successful ministry of more than thirty years, both his sight and hearing began to fail. He died at the age of seventy-seven. Thousands of people attended his funeral.

At his own request John Berridge was buried on the north-east side of Everton churchyard as “a means of consecrating it”. This piece of ground had previously been reserved for those who had come to a dishonourable end.

The Art of Prophesying – Puritan William Perkins

William Perkins was born in 1558 to Thomas and Hannah Perkins in the village of Marston Jabbett, in Bulkington parish, Warwickshire. As a youth, he indulged in recklessness, profanity, and drunkenness. In 1577, he entered Christs College in Cambridge as a pensioner, suggesting that socially he nearly qualified as gentry. He earned a bachelors degree in 1581 and a masters degree in 1584.

While a student, Perkins experienced a powerful conversion that probably began when he overheard a woman in the street chide her naughty child by alluding to drunken Perkins. That incident so humiliated Perkins that he gave up his wicked ways and fled to Christ for salvation. He gave up the study of mathematics and his fascination with black magic and the occult, and took up theology.

Cambridge was the leading Puritan center of the day. Perkins formal training was Calvinism within a scholastic framework. The strict scholastic training at Cambridge was modified somewhat, however, by Peter Ramus’s influence. Ramism had won the support of the Puritans, due to its practicality. Ramus, a converted Roman Catholic, had reformed the arts curriculum by applying it to daily life. He proposed a method to simplify all academic subjects, offering a single logic for both dialectic and rhetoric to make them understandable and memorable. Chaderton first introduced Ramus’s Art of Logic to Cambridge students, particularly to Gabriel Harvey, a lecturer who used Ramus’s methods for reforming the arts of grammar, rhetoric, and logic.

Perkins’s training in Ramus’s method oriented him toward practical application rather than speculative theory, and gave him skills for becoming a popular preacher and theologian.

From 1584 until his death, Perkins served as lecturer, or preacher, at Great St. Andrews Church, Cambridge, a most influential pulpit across the street from Christs College. He also served as a fellow at Christs College from 1584 to 1595. Fellows were required to preach, lecture, and tutor students, acting as guides to learning as well as guardians of finances, morals, and manners.

Perkins died from kidney stone complications in 1602.
