Pay Much Closer Attention – Pastor Patrick Hines Sermon (Hebrews 2:1-4) Starts @ approx 11 am EDT

[Hebrews 2:1-4 NASB20] 1 For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away [from it.] 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every violation and act of disobedience received a just punishment, 3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders, and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

Antidote to Roman Catholicism: Solus Christus / Christ Alone – Rev. Patrick Hines Christian Podcast

Antidote to Roman Catholicism: Solus Christus / Christ Alone – Rev. Patrick Hines Christian Podcast

“Solus Christus” is a Latin phrase from the Protestant Reformation, meaning “Christ alone.” It emphasizes that Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and humanity, and salvation is through Him alone, not through any other means, works, or intermediaries. Rooted in verses like 1 Timothy 2:5 (“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus”), it’s a core tenet in Reformed theology.

The phrase “Solus Christus” (“Christ alone”) emerged during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, a pivotal movement that reshaped Western Christianity. It was one of the five solas—theological principles that encapsulated the Reformers’ core convictions. To understand its historical context, let’s break it down:
Background: The Pre-Reformation Church
By the late Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Church held immense spiritual and political authority in Europe. Several practices and doctrines troubled reform-minded thinkers:
Indulgences: The sale of indulgences, where people paid for remission of sins or reduced time in purgatory, suggested salvation could be influenced by human works or money.

Veneration of Saints and Mary: The Church encouraged praying to saints and Mary as intercessors, which some saw as detracting from Christ’s unique role as mediator.

Clerical Mediation: The priesthood was viewed as a necessary intermediary between God and people, with the Mass and sacraments administered exclusively by priests.

Purgatory and Merit: The doctrine of purgatory and the idea of accumulating merit through good works implied that human efforts contributed to salvation.

These practices, combined with perceived corruption (e.g., simony, nepotism), fueled discontent. The Church’s authority rested on a combination of Scripture, tradition, and papal decrees, which critics argued obscured the centrality of Christ.
The Reformation and Solus Christus
The Reformation began in 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg church door, challenging indulgences and other practices. Luther and other Reformers (e.g., John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli) sought to return to biblical foundations, emphasizing that salvation was through Christ alone, not through human institutions, works, or intermediaries. Solus Christus was a direct response to what they saw as distortions in Catholic theology.
Key historical developments tied to Solus Christus:
Luther’s Theological Shift:
Luther, a Catholic monk, initially struggled with guilt and the impossibility of earning salvation through works. His study of Romans 1:17 (“The righteous shall live by faith”) led to his doctrine of justification by faith alone (sola fide), closely tied to Solus Christus.

He argued that Christ’s atoning work on the cross was sufficient for salvation, rejecting the need for additional mediators like priests or saints. In his 1520 treatise On the Freedom of a Christian, Luther stressed that Christians are directly united to Christ through faith.

Critique of Catholic Practices:
Reformers challenged the Catholic Mass, where the priest was seen as re-offering Christ’s sacrifice. They argued this undermined Christ’s once-for-all atonement (Hebrews 10:10).

The veneration of saints and relics was criticized as idolatry, diverting trust from Christ. Calvin, in his Institutes of the Christian Religion, called such practices a “perversion” of biblical faith.

Indulgences were seen as a commercialized barrier to the free gift of grace through Christ.

Scriptural Authority (Sola Scriptura):
Solus Christus was grounded in sola scriptura (“Scripture alone”). Reformers pointed to verses like 1 Timothy 2:5 (“one mediator… Christ Jesus”) and John 14:6 (“I am the way, the truth, and the life”) to argue that Scripture clearly established Christ’s exclusive role.

This challenged the Catholic reliance on tradition and papal authority, which the Reformers believed added unbiblical requirements to salvation.

The Five Solas:
Solus Christus interlocked with the other solas: sola scriptura (Scripture alone), sola fide (faith alone), sola gratia (grace alone), and soli Deo gloria (glory to God alone). Together, they formed a cohesive theological framework emphasizing God’s sovereignty and Christ’s sufficiency.

Key Events and Figures
1517–1521: Luther’s 95 Theses and subsequent writings (e.g., The Babylonian Captivity of the Church) articulated Solus Christus by attacking sacramentalism and the priesthood’s role.

1521 Diet of Worms: Luther’s refusal to recant (“Here I stand”) solidified his commitment to Christ-centered theology over ecclesiastical authority.

1530 Augsburg Confession: Drafted by Philipp Melanchthon, this Lutheran statement of faith emphasized Christ’s sole mediatorship.

John Calvin (1530s–1560s): In Geneva, Calvin systematized Reformation theology, reinforcing Solus Christus in his writings and church reforms.

Frontline Fellowship seeks to glorify God through:

  • Evangelising in War Zones
  • Assisting Persecuted Churches
  • Working for Reformation and Revival in Africa
  • Serving God in: Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Congo.

Evangelising in the War Zones
Frontline Fellowship is a Bible-based African Mission that has pioneered missionary work into neglected mission fields and areas resistant to the Gospel. Since 1982, Frontline missionaries have travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometres by foot, by motorbikes, by dugout canoes, trucks and aircraft to boldly proclaim the Gospel of repentance and faith in Christ to soldiers, guerrillas, resistance fighters and civilians on all sides of many conflicts in Africa.

The Founder and Director of Frontline Fellowship, Dr. Peter Hammond, has personally carried out over 140 missions in the war zones and presented over 18,000 sermons, Bible studies and lectures in 38 countries. In the course of their missionary activities some Frontline missionaries have been ambushed, come under artillery bombardment and mortar fire, been stabbed, shot at, beaten by mobs, arrested and imprisoned. The Frontline mission base and high school in Sudan repeatedly came under aerial bombardment by the government of Sudan Air Force (10 times in 18 months). Over the years, 20 people involved in Frontline Fellowship outreaches have been imprisoned in Marxist or Muslim countries. Yet, by the grace of God, every one was freed in response to persistent prayer and pressure (Luke 18:1 – 5).

Assisting Persecuted Churches
Frontline Fellowship has been in the forefront of:
Pioneering missionary work into war-ravaged Angola, Mozambique and Sudan; Researching and opening up neglected areas and restricted access areas;

Assisting persecuted Christians and prisoners with books, emergency relief aid (including tons of medicines, foods, clothes, seed, bicycles and tools), encouragement and Bible teaching;
Developing a network of couriers and evangelists to distribute many tons of Bibles, in over 100 languages, to suffering Christians;
Providing in-depth leadership training for thousands of pastors, evangelists, chaplains, teachers, nurses and civil leaders in neglected areas;
Speaking up for the persecuted, publishing the sufferings and testimonies of believers in print, on radio, T.V. and in hundreds of international meetings every year.

Working for Reformation and Revival
Frontline Fellowship is a leading force in leadership training and networking for Reformation.

Frontline Fellowship publishes over 100 items a year and has distributed millions of Gospel leaflets, booklets, books and Bibles throughout Africa.

Frontline Fellowship has distributed millions of Gospel leaflets, booklets, books and Bibles throughout Africa. Frontline Fellowship conducts an average of 30 seminars, conferences or workshops each year. Through literature and leadership training, Frontline Fellowship is educating and enlisting tens of thousands of Christians to “disciple the nations…teaching obedience.” Just in Sudan, since 1995, Frontline Fellowship trained thousands of pastors, chaplains, medics and teachers. We provided thousands of Christian textbooks to over 350 schools in Sudan. FF has delivered and distributed over 950,000 Bibles and Christian books in 24 languages throughout 14 regions of Sudan.

In Zimbabwe, Frontline is distributing food, medicines and Scriptures into some of the most desperately needy areas and providing leadership, training thousands of pastors, chaplains, medics and teachers.

Hell – Pastor Romesh Prakashpalan Sermon (Luke 16:19-31)

Hell – Pastor Romesh Prakashpalan Sermon (Luke 16:19-31)

In the PM we consider a most sobering topic, one often neglected, one often disparaged. It is the doctrine of Hell. We consider the necessity of this dread place where sinners are justly tormented endlessly in both body and soul. We consider the horrors of the torments described by our Lord Jesus Christ upon those who do not take His mercy and die in their sins. And we, blessedly, also consider the remedy to Hell found graciously and freely in Jesus who suffered the pains of Hell in the place of His elect on His Cross. A meditation on this doctrine will cause us to flee to Jesus and also take the gospel to those who are perishing around the world.

[Luke 16:19-31 KJV] 19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that [would come] from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Rom is married to Maegan and they have four children. Rom was raised as a Hindu and became an atheist early in life. The Lord called him to faith through hearing the gospel in 2009 (Romans 10:17). Soon after, he felt a call to gospel ministry. He graduated from the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary (RPTS) in 2020 with an MDiv. He was first ordained and installed as a ruling elder at DRPC in March 2015 and then a teaching elder in July 2020 by the Midwest Presbytery of the RPCNA. In addition to homiletics, counseling, and theology; Rom enjoys cooking, especially smoking meat, computer science (his first vocation), and roadtrips with his family.

UK Gospel Witness – 15th July 2025

UK Gospel Witness – 15th July 2025

A CALL TO WAKE UP AND TURN TO GOD! A group of Reformed ministers gathered outside Parliament to proclaim the Glorious Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday 15th July 2025. In a time when our nation has rejected God we are witnessing new levels of wickedness and evil both morally and legally. Recent legislation on the Assisted Dying Law and New Abortion Law is an absolute abomination. Our government must be called to repent as we cry to the Lord to be merciful in a time of judgement upon our nation. It is our firm conviction that this is a time for God-fearing Christians to unite together and make a public stand and proclamation of Gospel truth in the face of such evil.

Thomas Goodwin (Rollesby, Norfolk, October 5, 1600 – February 23, 1680)

Thomas Goodwin known as ‘the Elder’, was an English Puritan theologian and preacher, and an important leader of religious Independents. Christopher Hill places Goodwin in the ‘main stream of Puritan thought’.

In 1643 he was chosen a member of the Westminster Assembly, and at once identified himself with the Congregational party, generally referred to in contemporary documents as the “dissenting brethren.” He frequently preached by appointment before the Commons, and in January 1650 his talents and learning were rewarded by the House with the presidentship of Magdalen College, Oxford, a post which he held until the Restoration of 1660.

He was chaplain to Oliver Cromwell from 1656. He rose into high favor with the Protector, and was one of his intimate advisers, attending him on his death-bed. He was also a commissioner for the inventory of the Westminster Assembly, 1650, and for the approbation of preachers, 1653, and together with John Owen drew up an amended Westminster Confession in 1658. From 1660 until his death, he lived in London, and devoted himself exclusively to theological study and to the pastoral charge of the Fetter Lane Independent Church.
